The Legend of Vox Machina – Season 3 Episodes Ranked

“The Legend of Vox Machina” is no longer just a cult hit – it’s gone beyond the novelty of a DnD campaign come to life and has established itself as one of the best animated shows airing right now.

Every episode yet again had their merits, filled with action and intense character moments … but some episodes were better than others. How would I rank all of Season 3’s episodes? Oh, and beware of SPOILERS if you haven’t watched this season already.

Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:

12 – To the Ends of the World (Episode 10)

“To the Ends of the World” had the unenviable task of following the massive Thordak battle, but I can appreciate the direction they took of splitting up the party.

Pike leaves to meet Kaylie, Keyleth leaves to meet the Ashari Council and learn an ancient ritual, and the twins leave to hunt Ripley at a shady docks. It’s all set-up for greater things, but as a result this is the most filler-y episode in the show thus far.

11 – Prisoners of Ank’Harel (Episode 2)

Like “To the Ends of the World”, “Prisoners of Ank’Harel” followed such an action-packed one (the season opener) so it felt tame in comparison.

Scanlan reconnects with daughter Kaylie, Percy rigs an explosion to kill Ripley but fails, we find out the chest-plate vestige was a fake, everyone gets arrested and Scanlan saves them all last-minute.

Bonus points for Scanlan’s “Objection!” – an homage to voice actor Sam Riegel’s role as Phoenix Wright in the modern games. I’ll take any excuse to talk about that series!

10 – Hell to Pay (Episode 4)

“Hell to Pay” felt the most side quest-y of all the Season 3 episodes. Not a bad thing, per se, but maybe a little random in the grand scheme of things.

Vox Machina travel through the hell dimension and Pike plays Zerxus in a game of truth and chance for the Plate of the Dawnmartyr. The Calamity references were pretty dope.

9 – Vexations (Episode 3)

A sort of breather episode before things dramatically picked up, which gave the cast some time to shine.

Vex gets with Percy, Keyleth denies Vax, they venture into the hell dimension and Vorugal begins his attack.

8 – The Siege of Emon (Episode 8)

It was a really clever move to show the flashback of how Percy met Vox Machina and then immediately follow that with the funeral. Way to kill the mood, writers.

“The Siege of Emon” is an episode where Vox Machina gather all their allies against Thordak (and Laura Bailey acts up a storm as Vex), and the ambush at the end is a neat twist.

7 – A Deadly Bargain (Episode 1)

“A Deadly Bargain” was a great season opener, and the first scene of Vax escaping the dragons was a fantastic way to get the adrenaline pumping.

Vox Machina strike a deal with Raishan, Keyleth and Vax kiss, the dragons have amassed a legion of eggs that’ll hatch soon, and Ripley steals a vestige. A lot happens for a season opener!

6 – The Coming Storm (Episode 6)

There are two halves to “The Coming Storm” – the Chateau Shorthalt stuff and the Whitestone attack – and both are entertaining.

Whitestone being attacked by newly-hatched dragons is a thrill, but I’d give the edge to the Chateau Shorthalt section for the catchy song and the legendary bath scene.

5 – Deadly Echoes (Episode 11)

Everything that got set up in “To the Ends of the World” gets a payoff in “Deadly Echoes”.

Kaylie wakes Scanlan from his coma, Keyleth survives the ritual, and the twins kill Ripley in an epic battle on a ship. The twist that Percy’s soul might be trapped in the gun lifted my spirits higher than they’d been for the whole season.

Oh, and Raishan possesses Thordak’s corpse. What could go wrong?

4 – The Frigid Doom (Episode 5)

It’s time for a blood-pumping battle against one of the Chroma Conclave … and it’s only episode five! Season 3 didn’t mess around.

Vorugal lives up to his title of “The Frigid Doom” – he tore that hell demon a new one, and his death was very satisfying (albeit a little quick)

3 – Souls in Darkness (Episode 12)

While not the peak of the season either in action or emotion, “Souls in Darkness” had just the right amount of both to make for an amazing season finale.

Keyleth gets revenge on Raishan by re-infecting her, Vax risks his soul to revive Percy, and Vox Machina split up (I wish we got to see “Bard’s Lament” play out, but oh well). That Vax / Percy scene was the second time in the season I almost teared up. Speaking of which …

2 – Cloak and Dagger (Episode 7)

Percy is probably my favourite character out of Vox Machina, so you can imagine my dismay by the time the credits rolled on “Cloak and Dagger”.

We see Ripley’s backstory and how delirium gas affects the team, but it’s Percy’s showdown against Ripley – and his eventual death by her hand – that’ll live long in the memory.

1 – Thordak (Episode 9)

It’s Vox Machina vs. Thordak time, what the last two seasons have been building towards, and they didn’t disappoint.

Pike finally masters the Plate of the Dawnmartyr, Grog kills Thordak’s brood, Scanlan enters a coma, Vax dives through Thordak for the killing blow AND Raishan steals Thordak’s body for unknown nefarious purposes. If I had to sum this episode up in two words – holy shit!

A couple of episodes may have dragged in places, but otherwise I was shocked by how hooked Season 3 made me. It feels like the best season yet – and the exciting thing is it can only get better!

I Didn’t Like Silksong – My Review

I played “Hollow Knight” a few years ago, well after its initial release. I remember it being quite tough but I embraced the challenge and fell in love with its quirky world and its tight combat. I even ranked the Charms and the Bosses on this blog after my second playthrough. When “Silksong” was finally…

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Main Characters Ranked

I finished “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” a good few months ago and have wanted to talk about it on this blog for ages, but I never knew what to focus on. It’s a near-perfect game, so any ranking I do is going to be quite boring with everything in the higher tiers. When I thought…
