One day while browsing YouTube, I came across a silly little video of two New Zealanders singing a funny song. Upon further research, it turns out they’ve written many funny songs. Some of them quite rib-tickling.
I can’t say I’ve heard every song they’ve ever done, but I wanted to highlight my favourite ten at this present moment. As an added bonus, I’ll even throw in my favourite lyric from each track.
Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:
10 – The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room)
Best Lyric: “You could be a part time model, but you’d probably still have to keep your normal job“
Some of the best Flight of the Conchords songs are when Jermaine and Bret lean into the absurdity of their “sexual appeal”.
It’s a song about settling for the best option available – in other words, it’s intensely relateable.
9 – Ladies Of The World
Best Lyric: “Oh you sexy hermaphrodite lady-man-ladies, with your sexy lady bits and your sexy man bits too, even you must be into you“
Another flirtatious Flight of the Conchords song – this time even sexier and more absurd than before.
I especially like the random anti-war tangent in the middle.
8 – Albi The Racist Dragon
Best Lyric: “ ‘No Albi, you didn’t kill me with your dragon flames, I crawled to safety but you did leave me badly disfigured’, laughed the boy“
“Albi The Racist Dragon” is less of a song and more of a story, but that doesn’t make it any less funny.
The fact it’s framed as an innocent children’s tale is what makes it work.
7 – Bowie’s In Space
Best Lyric: “Hey Bowie, do you have one really funky sequined space suit? Or do you have several ch-changes?“
As an avid David Bowie fan, it’s fair to say I was tickled by “Bowie’s In Space”.
They nail the 60’s dreamy-space aesthetic, and the gravelly voices they put on throughout the whole thing are perfect.
6 – Think About It
Best Lyric: “What’s wrong with the world today, (unintelligible mumbling)“
Some Flight of the Conchords songs fire on all cylinders – “Think About It” is killer line after killer line.
The first time I heard Jermaine’s random mumbling in the first chorus, I think I wet myself from laughter.
5 – Father And Son
Best Lyric: “I’m not sad because I’ve still got Dad … And another even cooler dad“
“Father And Son” is surprisingly quite a beautiful song in its own right. It also happens to be about an absolute loser of a father.
The earnest lyrics juxtaposed with the bitter truth of Bret’s comments make this such a rollercoaster of emotions.
4 – Carol Brown
Best Lyric: “He’s just a man who never grew up / I thought I told you to shut uh-uh-up“
Alongside “Father And Son”, “Carol Brown” is such a great song in its own right that I feel it could play on radios. Listeners would be confused … but it still deserves radio time.
The endless cascade of ex-girlfriends only get funnier with each new spurned lover, and Jermaine’s childish interjections are what binds the comedy together.
3 – Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros
Best Lyric: “Be more constructive with your feedback, please“
“Carol Brown” had quite a late surge up this ranking, but my top three were set in stone – these are the three Flight of the Conchord songs that never fail to put a smile on my face.
“Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros” is lyrically dense and funny from all angles – both Bret and Jermaine have many hilarious moments of anti-rap.
2 – Jenny
Best Lyric: “Yeah! Oh, we just grabbed a sandwich, and put it in our mouths. Oh, that’s the only way to have sandwiches!“
From start to finish, “Jenny” is the most cohesive of all the Flight of the Conchords songs.
What begins as a simple misunderstanding spirals out of control, and Jermaine’s self-aware attempts to railroad the conversation are unbelievably funny.
1 – Business Time
Best Lyric: “Then you tell me you want some more. Well, uh, I’m not surprised. But I’m quite sleepy“
“Business Time” was the first Flight of the Conchords song I discovered one night while browsing YouTube, and it remains my favourite of the lot.
It’s a funky and hilarious take on marital intercourse (as fleeting as it is), and Jermaine’s delivery is at an all-time high throughout the whole thing.

2019 – Hong Kong protests China’s undemocratic rulings, Algerians protest their president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Sudanese protest their president Omar Hassan al-Bashir, Chileans protest inequality, Iraq protests its government, Iran protests fuel subsidies, and elsewhere Bolivia, India, Nicaragua and Russia all partake in “The Year of Protests”. The first picture of a black hole is taken.…
God Of War: Ragnarok – All Nine Realms Ranked
We couldn’t have asked for much more from 2018’s “God Of War” reboot. It had everything – tight combat, an amazing story with fleshed-out characters, an expansive journey through the realms … well, not all the realms. One of my biggest dreams for the sequel, “Ragnarok”, was to be able to explore all nine realms…
“Rick And Morty” Season 8 – Every Episode Ranked
“Rick and Morty” Season 8 is finally on Netflix, which means it’s time for me to rank some more episodes! As I’ve done with previous seasons, I’ll give each episode a graded score to mark their quality. It was a mixed bag this season, so the grades should help to set the episodes apart. Before…
