I recently (depending on when I post this) ranked the JoJo villains, so now it’s time for me to rank … pretty much everyone else.
I’ll be looking at the major characters in the series who aren’t antagonists and ranking them on how much I personally connected to them (possible SPOILERS ahead). Sorry if I missed your favourite character completely. They must’ve not been memorable enough.
Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:
Borderline Pointless
These characters could’ve been taken out of / replaced in the story and nothing would’ve changed.
30 – Pannacotta Fugo
In terms of “wasted potential”, one character in JoJo stands out as the most disappointing – Pannacotta Fugo.
We get a brief glimpse of his Stand “Purple Haze” during the mirror world fight, but otherwise he and his Stand have no stand-out moments across the whole first half of “Golden Wind”.
The saddest thing about Fugo, though, is that he gets unceremoniously dumped from the cast once things get interesting. Apparently Araki was going to write him back in later in the Part but changed his mind, so what we got was an extremely undercooked character who bailed from the crew just as things were getting tough.
29 – Jonathan Joestar
It feels sacrilegious to put Jonathan Joestar, the first ever protagonist in the series, in second-to-last place. Unfortunately, he’s as boring as dried paint.
He has no character quirks or motivation other than being pure-good and wanting to stop the evil Dio. Every character around him outshines him, and the only true connection I felt to him was during his death scene.
28 – Iggy
The farting dog.
Iggy got a little bit of development by the end, and his final scene was touching, but he was introduced as a farting dog. An immediate red flag.
(… Is it bad that I put a gassy dog above Jonathan Joestar?)
27 – Muhammad Avdol
Avdol was just along for the ride, I guess.
He’s the least interesting Stardust Crusader, and it’s impressive how often he got sidelined in service of other characters.
You Were There, I Guess
They had their moments, but these characters failed to leave an impression on me.
26 – Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli
Like quite a few of the characters lower down on this list, people only remember Caesar for his emotional death scene.
As a character? Slightly more interesting than Jonathan Joestar. His bickering and general feud-to-friendship arc with Joseph was entertaining at points, but Caesar himself is the dullest of all the JoBros.
25 – Lisa Lisa
If this was a “hottest JoJo characters” list, Lisa Lisa would rank much higher. Unfortunately for her, good looks and sex appeal don’t equate to a good character.
The twist about her lineage is the saving grace for what would’ve otherwise been the most generic femme fatale / mentor figure ever.
24 – Rudol von Stroheim
Rudol von Stroheim was the first character to truly put the “bizarre” in “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures”.
Araki is a mad genius for coming up with “German scientist turns himself into a cyborg sub-machine gun with other mechanical enhancements”. As a character, however, he doesn’t get to do much.
23 – Will Anthonio Zeppeli
The man who mentored Jonathan Joestar and first taught him the ways of Hamon.
What Will Zeppeli lacks in character traits he makes up for in charisma and pure enigmatic energy.
22 – Leone Abbacchio
Abbacchio was always the hard-arse of the “Golden Wind” gang, but more often than not his reservations were reasonable.
Like many JoJo characters, his death scene is what I’ll remember most.
21 – Trish Una
Trish added a nice dynamic to the Italian crew.
I wish we got a bit more of her Stand, but she was a breath of fresh air in the middle of a sausage-fest.
20 – Robert E. O. Speedwagon
Best boy.
Jonathan should count his lucky stars he had a friend as good as Speedwagon. Dude devoted his life to Jonathan within a minute of meeting.
Great Characters
I enjoyed watching these characters. They’re not particularly iconic, and I don’t think I’d choose to have a poster of any of them on my wall, but they were entertaining nonetheless.
19 – Joseph Joestar (Stardust Crusaders)
I’ve decided to split Joseph Joestar’s appearances in “Battle Tendency” and “Stardust Crusaders” into two separate characters, as I feel the two come across as very different people.
The older, wizened version of Joseph in “Stardust Crusaders” is my least favourite of the two, but I still really enjoyed his goofy attitude.
18 – Emporio Alnino
Emporio was, for the most part, a whiny loser. He was very fighting averse and he constantly told Jolyne and company to do the opposite of something cool, like be careful or run away.
As it turns out, this was all a build-up to the final battle. He fully redeemed himself against Pucci and became a last-minute “Stone Ocean” MVP.
17 – Giorno Giovanna
If you ignore Jonathan Joestar at the bottom end of this list, Giorno Giovanna is the lowest-ranked protagonist character. Why? Because he’s as boring as a box of nails.
He made up for his lack of charisma with his incredible brains and brawns – he was arguably the smartest and most cunning character we’ve ever seen in JoJo, and his consistently ingenious ways out of problems were staggering.
16 – Noriaki Kakyoin
A part of me thinks Kakyoin is ranked too high (as he’s quite one-note and boring), but c’mon. He’s a Stardust Crusader. He’s an OG JoBro. He’s exactly the kind of friend Jotaro needed.
He had a brief hiatus when he got slashed in the eyes, but otherwise he was a constant and reliable member of the Dio-hunting team.
15 – Narancia Ghirga
Narancia started off as a bit of a whiny / childish member of the Italian Gang, but over time he showed a lot of heart and commitment to his friends.
He also has arguably the saddest death of all – there’s no build-up and no warning, and it’s almost unceremonious the way he gets killed off-screen.
14 – Ermes Costello
Ermes is the official JoBro for “Stone Ocean” (I think), and she did a good job of helping Jolyne when she needed it the most.
She didn’t have the most interesting Stand ability, and she was rarely in any of the most memorable scenes, but her backstory and confrontational personality were interesting nonetheless.
13 – Koichi Hirose
Is Koichi or Okuyasu considered the official JoBro for “Diamond Is Unbreakable”? Either way, Koichi was one reliable guy … so I’m told.
I liked how his Stand (and his confidence by extension) evolved over the course of Part 4.
12 – Narciso Anasui
Narciso was an absolute creep at first. His core personality was being evasive and simping after Jolyne, but as “Stone Ocean” went on he proved to be one of the most useful allies of the Part.
His love for Jolyne seemed genuine and pure (albeit very weird), and his Stand powers were really cool to watch.
11 – Okuyasu Nijimura
There’s no doubt in my mind that Okuyasu is the dumbest JoBro in the series. His Stand was also criminally under-used. As a character, however, I couldn’t help but like him.
He was a great friend to Josuke throughout “Diamond Is Unbreakable”, and his goofy scenes were always a joy.
10 – Josuke Higashikata
“Diamond Is Unbreakable” may be my favourite Part, but that doesn’t automatically qualify Josuke as my favourite JoJo. He could be a little too meat-headed and hot-headed and waffle-headed for my liking at times.
He’s still a really charismatic protagonist, though. His Stand’s healing and reconstitution abilities always kept me on my toes, and his brief moments of intelligence were really impressive.
True JoBros
These are the best JoJo characters. The ones that made me want to keep watching.
9 – Guido Mista
The gun-toting, bullet-loving, four-hating Mista was always a highlight of “Golden Wind”.
It helped that he took part in some of the best fights in the Part.
8 – Jolyne Cujoh
I don’t think it’s controversial to call Jolyne the most fleshed-out and fully-rounded protagonist in the series.
She is noticeably and fundamentally a different person by the end of “Stone Ocean”, and her endless creativity and intelligence never ceased to amaze.
7 – Weather Report
I was immediately on board with Weather Report from the moment he was introduced – he’s a quiet enigma who can kick ass, and his backstory was shrouded in mystery.
He only got cooler the more we learned about him, and his Heavy Forecast ability was one of “Stone Ocean’s” many peaks.
6 – F.F.
Maybe this is a controversial pick, but my favourite character from “Stone Ocean” (as close as the race was with the previous two entries) was F.F.
She’s a bundle of joy from the moment she decided to ally with Jolyne, and I was genuinely heart-broken to see her leave the series so early.
5 – Jotaro Kujo
On the surface, Jotaro is quite a mundane and one-note protagonist. He acts tough and likes to hit stuff. Quite frankly, I’m amazed I ranked him as highly as I did.
His gruff delivery, his penchant for cool and iconic moments, and his repeated appearances / longevity make him the poster boy of the JoJo franchise.
4 – Bruno Bucciarati
“Golden Wind” had a really strong cast on the whole, but it was the leader of the gang – Bruno Bucciarati – who I resonated with most.
He always seemed to have a grasp of the situation, however dire, and his final few episodes where he knew he was a dead man walking made for some really emotional viewing.
3 – Joseph Joestar (Battle Tendency)
Joseph Joestar was the best character (and overall part) of “Battle Tendency” and it’s not even close.
He was far more charismatic and interesting than the previous Part’s protagonist, and his cheeky persona and ability to predict his opponent’s next move made him stand out in every frame.
2 – Jean Pierre Polnareff
The cast of “Stardust Crusaders” can reasonably be called one-note and under-written … with the exception of Polnareff.
His backstory was a solid motivation against J. Geil and then Dio, and his general goofball persona mixed with his slick fighting ability made him the most engaging character in Part 3.
1 – Rohan Kishibe
When I finished “Diamond Is Unbreakable”, I immediately went and watched “Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan”. I can confidently say no other (living) JoJo character could compel me enough to watch a spin-off show.
His arrogance, his intelligence, his quick-drawings, his Stand ability, his warranted confidence, his interactions with everyone else in Morioh … Rohan was a big part of why “Diamond Is Unbreakable” became my favourite Part.
Aaaand that’s my list! You can check out some of my latest blog posts below:
