I’m on a bit of a Simon & Garfunkel binge at the moment – their incredible songwriting and overlapping vocals are hitting that sweet spot for me right now.
This’ll be a quick one today, as I wanted to highlight my ten favourite tracks of theirs at the moment.
Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:
10 – The Only Living Boy in New York
Paul Simon wrote “The Only Living Boy in New York” during a period of loneliness, when separated from creative partner Art Garfunkel. That backstory already makes this song extremely sentimental.
The lyrics are very touching and personal, and the vocals sound almost ethereal at points.
9 – I Am a Rock
The final song on “Sounds of Silence” is a corker.
The lyrics hit as hard as ever, and the chorus of “I Am a Rock” gets stuck in your head for days.
8 – El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
One of the stranger songs in Simon and Garfunkel’s discography, and yet it works.
“El Condor Pasa” is exotic and entrancing, and evokes a sense of liberation.
7 – Homeward Bound
A classic Simon and Garfunkel tune.
I always long for a warm bed whenever I hear “Homeward Bound”.
6 – Cecilia
“Cecilia” is raucous and lively, with excellent percussion.
If there’s a Simon and Garfunkel song fit for any generation, it’s this one.
5 – Mrs. Robinson
Simon and Garfunkel were tasked with making songs for “The Graduate” movie soundtrack, but they didn’t have to go so hard.
There’s a bounciness to “Mrs. Robinson” as well as a strange sadness.
4 – The Boxer
These top four songs are among the greatest of all time, and I constantly listen to them whenever I get the Simon and Garfunkel urge.
“The Boxer” tells a melancholic story with some catchy vocalizations sprinkled in.
3 – America
“America” is a song I’ve recently fallen head over heels for – in time it may even climb to second or first place on this ranking, but for now it doesn’t have the iconic appeal of the top two.
This might just be my favourite set of Simon and Garfunkel lyrics: “‘Kathy I’m lost’ I said, though I knew she was sleeping. I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why” … chills!
2 – The Sound of Silence
These top two were hard to separate, but in the end “The Sound of Silence” had to settle for the silver medal.
These are my favourite set of lyrics alongside “America”, and those choruses have been burnt into the minds of everyone on planet earth.
1 – Bridge Over Troubled Water
The slowest, tenderest Simon and Garfunkel song, and it’s always been my favourite.
Paul Simon’s songwriting on “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is astounding, and Art Garfunkel blows the house down with his vocal performance.
Aaaand that’s my list! You can check out some of my latest blog posts below:
No complaints from me. Though I’d squeeze in The Dangling Conversation and For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her.
