Season 2 of the amazing “The Legend of Vox Machina” has finally finished airing, and it was just as entertaining as before. I might even go as far as saying it was better than the first … but that’s a conversation for later!
There were no lacking episodes this time, and it was a thrill ride from start to finish – how would I rank every episode?
Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:
Good
12 – Echo Tree (Ep 8)
Unlike the first two episodes of Season One, I didn’t think any of the episodes this season were sub-par. They could have all been “Great” in reality, but I had to be harsh to separate the greats from the classics.
Vex and Vax meeting their terrible father is fun, and the scene where Vex gets the bow vestige has some great action, but the B-plot of Grog, Scanlan and Pike sitting around is completely pointless. That B-plot is the only reason this is in last.
11 – The Trials of Vasselheim (Ep 2)
Grog fights an old dude, and the rest of Vox Machina deal with the sphynx’s trials. Both are fun, but I’ve seen them done better in other shows and games.
10 – Into Rimecleft (Ep 6)
Both sphynx episodes ended up coming near the bottom of this list, and to be honest I don’t really have a good explanation as to why.
Scanlan’s song to beat the second sphynx trial is catchy, Grog’s sword hungering adds a fun dimension, and the dragon vs. sphynx battle at the end is full of awesome spectacle. If I had to pinpoint my main gripe with “Into Rimecleft”, it’s that Vox Machina don’t have much agency in the plot.
Great
9 – A Test of Pride (Ep 9)
I wasn’t expecting a Grog backstory, and I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be one of the most engaging in the group.
Kevdak and the Herd make for some intimidating villains, and the ending is badass, but you can tell the episode is mainly setup for the action to come.
8 – The Sunken Tomb (Ep 3)
I know nothing about the original campaign that this series is based on, so I was just as surprised as a newbie when Vex was killed in a flash.
The drama of the situation is handled really well, and if the battle beforehand had been a little flashier this would have ranked highly.
7 – Rise of the Chroma Conclave (Ep 1)
“Rise of the Chroma Conclave” was an excellent, action-packed opening, and it made Season One’s first episode look like child’s play.
The dragons attacking the city was beautifully realised and animated, and you got a real sense that the characters were in the midst of an apocalypse. Shoutout to Thordak’s design – when his fire turned from orange to blue and he started venting like a steampunk engine, I nearly gasped.
6 – Those Who Walk Away (Ep 4)
It’s a little bit of a shame how quickly they revived Vex after the events of “The Sunken Tomb”, but I love that it came at a cost to Vax.
His visions of the Matron of Ravens are beautifully animated, the the fight scene at the end where he embraces the vestige is awesome.
5 – Belly of the Beast (Ep 11)
The “least good” of the final batch of episodes, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t blow my socks off.
I really liked the character building of both Scanlan and Vax, and the final fight with Umbrasyl is as cool as ever … but you can tell they’re saving the juicy stuff for the finale.
4 – The Fey Realm (Ep 7)
Considering “The Fey Realm” is more of a setup for things to come, usually a factor in an episode ranking lower on my list, I was surprised by how good it was.
The Fey Realm itself is beautifully realised and animated, the drug trip scene is probably the funniest of the season, and the song that Scanlan and Pike sing while carrying the weakened Grog is so much fun.
3 – Pass Through Fire (Ep 5)
Season Two made it abundantly clear that every character was going to get their due development, and “Pass Through Fire” was Keyleth’s time to shine.
Her backstory could have been developed a little more, but the fight at the volcano – and the scene where she saves the Fire Ashari – was the highlight of the first half of the season. That being said, I think the best of Keyleth is yet to come.
Amazing
2 – The Hope Devourer (Ep 12)
For the second season in a row, the finale delivered on all fronts. Strangely, this was also the second time in a row that the finale was only my second favourite episode of the season.
Vox Machina’s fight against Umbrasyl is just as climactic and badass as you’d expect, and there’s yet another great tease for the story arcs to come. If I had any complaints, it’s that Scanlan delivering the killing blow felt a little too cheesy and quick.
1 – The Killbox (Ep 10)
I knew Grog’s fight with Kevdak was going to deliver, but I wasn’t expecting it to be the best episode of the series so far.
It’s the culmination of all of Grog’s character development over the season, and the arrival of Vox Machina felt so euphoric. This has some of the best action I’ve seen all year, and the animators completely knocked it out of the park.
Season Rating: B+
Season Two of “The Legend of Vox Machina” was arguably better than the first, with funnier jokes, meatier action and more in-depth characters. I’d even say this is a more consistent season than before, and it nearly earned an “A-” score. Bring on Season Three!

Friends – Season 9 Episodes Ranked
Oh boy … We’ve finally reached what is widely considered to be the worst season of Friends. But is it actually an underrated season of this brilliant show? No, it isn’t. In fact, it may even be worse than I remember. Let’s get to some ranking! Before we begin with this sorry state of affairs,…
James Bond Films – Overrated / Underrated
One of the first film franchises I fell in love with was Bond, James Bond – he just seemed like the coolest guy in the world, and all of his movies provided at the very least some form of entertainment. I’ll be looking at each official film (so not “Casino Royale [1967]” or “Never Say…
Friends – Season 8 Episodes Ranked
Season 8 of Friends is a bit of a strange one – I remember it being the last great season of the show, but in actual fact it’s a little sub-par compared to the other fantastic seasons. I still had a fun time with it nonetheless – how would I rank every episode? You can…
