Every Mission Impossible Film Ranked

Unlike most Hollywood franchises, “Mission Impossible” seems to just be getting better and better. It helps that Tom Cruise is an eldritch horror that doesn’t age!

With the release of “Dead Reckoning: Part One”, my mission is to rank the seven MI films, if I choose to accept it. Let’s get to it! (… And no, this blog post won’t self-destruct. Probably)

Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:

7 – Mission Impossible 2

John Woo brings all of his John Woo-isms to “Mission Impossible 2”, which ended up being more of a curse than a blessing.

The action is ridiculous, the plot is too far-fetched, and the whole package is unbelievably cheesy and unmemorable. Luckily, this is the only sub-par film in the franchise.

6 – Mission Impossible

A lot of the time with big franchises like this, the original is usually heralded as one of the best – it’s strange, therefore, that the first “Mission Impossible” is quite forgettable in the grand scheme of things.

It’s a decently fun spy thriller with some cool moments and action set-pieces, but the rest of the franchise does the whole schtick better.

5 – Mission Impossible 3

For many fans of the franchise, “Mission Impossible 3” was when the filmmakers started tapping into the really good stuff.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is great as the villain, and I love the darker tone, but overall this isn’t my favourite in the series.

4 – Rogue Nation

“Rogue Nation” suffers from being sandwiched between two superior movies, as it feels quite tame in comparison.

Rebecca Ferguson is a great new addition to the cast, and it keeps up the furious pace of the modern MI films, but “Rogue Nation” feels like the most by-the-book of the recent entries.

3 – Ghost Protocol

“Ghost Protocol” marked the start of a new era of Mission Impossible films, and the franchise moving forwards has been all the better for it.

This is easily one of the most abundantly fun films in the series, and that Burj Khalifa scene never fails to give me goosebumps.

2 – Dead Reckoning: Part One

The most recent film at the time of writing, and yet again Tom Cruise and co. knocked it out of the park for “Dead Reckoning: Part One”.

The plot feels a little overblown and the stunts a little tame compared to previous entries (apart from that one big stunt, of course), so I don’t think it’s the absolute best like some are saying, but I still loved my cinema experience nonetheless. Bring on part two!

1 – Fallout

After “Ghost Protocol” and “Rogue Nation” many thought the MI franchise had peaked, but “Fallout” blew everyone’s socks off and then some.

Henry Cavill is a fantastic addition to the cast, and the break-neck plot allows for some incredible action and nary a dull moment. Time will tell if “Dead Reckoning: Part Two” can top this – it would have to be a hell of a film!

Aaand that’s my list! You can check out some of my latest blog posts below:

Top 10 Albums of the 1990’s

I’ve recently been going through every year in music for my thorough retrospectives, and as such I’ve been exposed to some fantastic albums. I wanted to talk about some of my favourites – this time looking at the 1990’s. I reviewed fifty albums as part of that decade’s retrospectives (five per year), all of which…

1/10 to 10/10 – Muse Songs

I recently watched a video of a man naming animes from 1/10 through to 10/10 in quality, and I enjoyed the format so much that I decided to steal it for my blog. I talked about my definitive one-through-tens for Ace Attorney cases, and now I’ll be looking at Muse songs in honour of their…

World Cup 2026 – My Predictions

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is fast approaching … and I have a feeling it might be the worst one yet. Many factors, like political unrest and the fact there’s 48 teams instead of 32 (making the schedule quite bloated) may land this tournament a place in football infamy. That being said, people were worried…
