“Nevermind” – Songs Ranked

“Nevermind” is a classic Nirvana album that is widely considered to be one of the greatest of all time, and it’s certainly one of my favourites … which is why I’m surprised I haven’t ranked the tracklist yet!

I’ll be ranking all thirteen tracks (yes, even the bonus track) from worst to best by my own personal preferences. Let’s get to it!

Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:

13 – Endless, Nameless

“Endless, Nameless” is a hidden bonus track, so it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things … But it still sucks either way.

It’s a cacophony of sound and ideas, and not the good kind. I tend to skip this and pretend it doesn’t exist.

12 – On A Plain

I love almost every track on “Nevermind”, but one of the main problems with Grunge Rock is that some songs start to blend together if you listen to them enough.

Of all the songs on the album, “On A Plain” is probably the one that could have been cut.

11 – Stay Away

“Stay Away” is probably my least favourite chorus on the album. I guess the lyrics don’t really do it for me?

10 – Territorial Pissings

Great title, and a good song too. I like the rising chords, and the chorus of “Territorial Pissings” is one of the angriest.

9 – Drain You

“Drain You” is ever so slightly quieter and more complex than some of the other tracks, which might be why I like it.

8 – Lounge Act

“Lounge Act” is all about that excellent bassline, as otherwise there’s not much going on. The chorus is pretty fun though.

7 – Breed

One of the gnarliest riffs on the album, “Breed” is all three members on top form with a good chorus to boot.

6 – Polly

One of my favourite things about “Nevermind” is how Nirvana will throw in a fairly acoustic song in the middle of all the chaos, and “Polly” has become iconic as a result.

Its chords are unique, and the lyrics are disturbing yet captivating.

5 – Something In The Way

It was a bold move to close one of music’s heaviest albums with a slow, moody track, but it paid off in spades.

I love the acoustic feel and the melancholy vibe, and the chorus is the most beautiful on the album.

4 – In Bloom

Any song was going to have a tough time sustaining the energy of the opener “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, but “In Bloom” does a fantastic job as a follow-up.

It has one of my favourite choruses on the album, and I love that lazy guitar solo near the end.

3 – Lithium

The opening guitar riff of “Lithium” already gets the song off to a great start, but it’s the loud chorus and later the awesome bridge that make this track legendary.

All three of these top songs are incredible, and they all play major roles in making “Nevermind” the cultural titan it is.

2 – Come As You Are

“Comes As You Are” has a GOATed riff that automatically qualified it for the “Amazing” tier five seconds in, but the praise doesn’t end there.

I love Cobain’s lazy vocals on the pre-chorus, and the chorus itself is just as hard-hitting as I could have wanted.

1 – Smells Like Teen Spirit

To call “Smells Like Teen Spirit” a cultural landmark would be an understatement.

It took the early 90’s by storm, and changed an entire generation’s perspective on music and self-expression. The guitar riff and chorus are some of the best you’ll ever hear … and I hope one day I’ll be able to understand the lyrics.

Aaaand that’s my list! You can check out some of my latest blog posts below:
