“Rick and Morty” Season 8 is finally on Netflix, which means it’s time for me to rank some more episodes!
As I’ve done with previous seasons, I’ll give each episode a graded score to mark their quality. It was a mixed bag this season, so the grades should help to set the episodes apart.
Before we begin, you can check out some of my other “Rick and Morty” rankings below:
Rick and Morty – Season 1 Episodes Ranked and Reviewed
Rick and Morty – Season 2 Episodes Ranked and Reviewed
Rick and Morty – Season 4 Episodes Ranked and Reviewed
Rick and Morty – Season 7 Episodes Ranked
10 – Ricker than Fiction
Score: C-
The best part about “Ricker than Fiction” is how they got James Gunn and Zach Snyder to voice themselves. Otherwise, this was a boring episode poking fun at movie clichés.
I was never invested in any of the random plots they kept throwing at me, and by trying to spoof every aspect of scriptwriting they ended up making good jokes about none of it.
9 – Cryo Mort a Rickver
Score: C
The cold open where they panic and hide in the cryo pods was the funniest part of “Cryo Mort a Rickver”. Oh, and the big chase at the end had its moments.
The middle part, however, was painfully standard. Rick adopts to a wealthy way of life, Morty to the poor counterpart. Not only have we seen this sort of wealth divide spoofed before in this show, but the commentary was very one-note and they forgot to put any jokes in it.
8 – The CurRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button
Score: C+
We’d already seen a Beth-centric episode earlier in the season, so I was a bit confused as to why we were focusing on Space Beth yet again for “The CurRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button”. I guess this episode gave the real Beth some time in the spotlight?
I couldn’t care less about the Beths de-aging plot. The side plot of Earth World, featuring a Danny DeVito cameo, was much better.
7 – Morty Daddy
Score: C+
“Morty Daddy” has two fairly solid plots, but neither of them were great. The resulting episode is as good as average can get.
Morty’s son trying to find his mother in Rick’s trash bin is a weird but alright storyline, and Rick and Summer visiting the pre-cog restaurant is a neat idea that spirals out of hand a bit too much for my liking.
6 – The Last Temptation of Jerry
Score: C+
By far the grossest, horniest “Rick and Morty” episode of the season … and yet, against all odds, “The Last Temptation of Jerry” somehow wasn’t the worst.
Jerry kills the Easter Bunny and slowly becomes the new Easter Bunny. Again, like the pre-cog restaurant sub-plot in “Morty Daddy”, I think it gets a little too crazy too quickly.
5 – Valkyrick
Score: B-
The first of the two Beth-centric episodes this season (if you don’t include her importance in the finale), and my favourite of the two.
Some Rick-Beth father-daughter bonding time is always a delight – especially when there’s an assassination and mutation conspiracy in the background.
4 – The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly
Score: B
It seems as though every year we’re guaranteed one Citadel inspired episode, and this season’s entry was “The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly”.
Farmer Rick takes revenge on a city of Ricks after they ransack a troupe of Mortys. This is one of the most action-packed episodes of the season – and any Citadel-adjacent worldbuilding is always going to be entertaining.
3 – Nomortland
Score: B
I waited with bated breath during this episode for the twist that bearded Jerry would betray our Jerry. Thankfully, that never happened – and “Nomortland” became a really charming episode as a result.
This is one of those gripping, magical, universe-hopping adventures which showcases the creativity of the writing and animation team. I doubt we will, but I hope we get to see more of Jerry on “The Road” in the future.
2 – Summer of All Fears
Score: B+
The season opener wasted no time at all hooking me with its visceral, in-depth Sci-Fi storytelling.
Summer and Morty get placed in a simulation after stealing Rick’s charger, and they live out their whole lives. When they return to the real world they struggle to adapt – this kind of spoof on serious Sci-Fi tropes is why I tune into this show.
1 – Hot Rick
Score: B+
In recent times, I can almost always rely on a “Rick and Morty” season finale to provide the goods. Season 8’s closer “Hot Rick” was no exception.
Rick locks away his memories of Diane in order to be more emotionally available, but a memory version of Rick tries to break her out of her memory prison. What follows is an intense, touching journey which may possibly act as a turning point for Rick’s character.
Season Score: B-
Pretty good stuff. There were a lot of episodes that I thought were a bit boring, and none of the episodes were all-time classics or anything like that, but on the whole I had a good time.
Aaaand that’s my list! You can check out some of my latest blog posts below:
Best Ace Attorney One-Hit Wonder Characters
I’ve ranked the main characters, I’ve ranked the defendants, I’ve ranked the culprits … but, as I realised during my recent Ace Attorney Deep Dives, that doesn’t highlight all of the wonderful characters this series has to offer. There are some side characters who appeared in one case and one case only, and yet made…
The Most Streamed Songs of Each Year – Ranked
It’s fascinating to me to see which songs have stood the test of time – i.e. which songs from decades ago still get Spotify streams, and how these songs compare to the popular songs of today. I’ve gathered the top streamed song on Spotify from each year since 1960 (according to “DavesMusicDatabase” as of December…
