I’m approaching my sixth anniversary of running this blog all about my personal opinions, and that got me thinking – are there any opinions I’d retract in hindsight? Are there things I said in the past which seem stupid nowadays?
And so I went back through every single one of my posts, and let me tell you – past Matt was an idiot. I found twenty-four reasons why I shouldn’t be allowed to post online ever again.
Before we begin, you can check out some of my related blog posts below:

2020
For the sake of this list, I’ll break down my bad opinions chronologically, year-by-year. I’ll also link the original blog posts so you can see I’m not making these crazy takes up.
“Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” Is A Bad Album
David Bowie Albums Ranked
When I was first getting into David Bowie’s whole discography, I thought it would be a good idea to rank every single one of his albums after a brief listen to each. Needless to say, my ranking research is a lot more thorough these days.
“Ashes To Ashes” is one of my favourite Bowie songs, but I guess I didn’t like the rest of them. How anyone could call this incredible album “Bad” is beyond me.
“Assassin’s Creed Unity” Is Bad & The Worst Game In The Series
Assassin’s Creed Games Ranked (OUTDATED)
I updated my AC game rankings after 2020 and have since rectified this mistake, but I have to hold my hands up and say that the original placement of “Unity” was out of personal spite rather than an objective metric.
I remember the game having lots of bugs when I first played it, so I didn’t finish it. When I did go back to finish it, however, I realised it was an unsung hero of the series. Its parkour still hasn’t been beaten.
“Cygnet Committee” Is Meh
“David Bowie (A.K.A Space Oddity)” Songs Ranked
I started a series in 2020 where I looked through every Bowie album and ranked the songs. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as familiar with his work as I am now … so a lot of my opinions haven’t aged well.
I brushed off “Cygnet Committee” as being a long, meandering filler track on “Space Oddity”, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s an exceptional display of songwriting which both never overstays its welcome and proves that Bowie was a mature musician ahead of his years.
“Aladdin Sane” Is Meh / “Drive-In Saturday” And “Time” Are Both Okay
“Aladdin Sane” Songs Ranked
My “Aladdin Sane” song ranking is possibly the worst set of opinions I’ve ever had on this blog. Reading it back drove me to the point of insanity.
Calling “Aladdin Sane” Meh is such a knee-jerk reaction – it may be Jazzy and Avant-Garde, but that doesn’t make it bad! And both “Drive-In Saturday” and “Time” are Great Bowie songs which deserve more love.
I must’ve only listened to the album once before forming an opinion. Note to self – listen to an album at least twice before posting your thoughts on the internet.
“Fantastic Voyage” Is The 8th Best Song On The Album
“Lodger” Songs Ranked
I didn’t make a note of every differing opinion I had over the years. I’d be here for ages if I mentioned how every single album I’ve reviewed has songs that could go up or down a place in the ranking … but the track ranking for Bowie’s “Lodger” caught my eye.
I was casually scrolling through it, and when I reached the bottom I thought “That’s odd, where’s Fantastic Voyage?”. It turns out I ranked it eighth, behind seven other songs.
I don’t know if it would definitely be my favourite on the album, but it’s got to be top two at least! It’s a powerful vocal performance from Bowie and a great way to start the album.
2021
“Teenage Wildlife” Is Okay
“Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” Songs Ranked
At first I called “Scary Monster (And Super Creeps)” a Bad album, and then I had the nerve a year later to call “Teenage Wildlife” Okay at best.
This song is waaaaay better than Okay. It’s an Amazing composition, and Bowie uses his full vocal and songwriting range to get his points across. I’d probably put it second place behind “Ashes To Ashes” these days.
“Nite Flights” Is Meh
“Black Tie White Noise” Songs Ranked
Is “Nite Flights” a song I would recommend to anyone? Not really, but it’s far from the Meh song I first made it out to be.
It’s a bit cheesy, even by 90’s standards, but I really like the groove and the vibe. Let’s call this an underrated gem which can stay buried in its era.
“Everyone Says Hi” Is Okay
“Heathen” Songs Ranked
Alright, alright, this is the last Bowie opinion on the list. Promise.
I remember seeing how “Everyone Says Hi” was one of the most famous songs from “Heathen”, and I couldn’t understand why for the life of me. It’s simple and the chorus seemed beneath Bowie’s experimental standards.
I think I ended up ranking it low out of hipster spite, pushing the other lesser-known songs above it. But, if I’m being fair, its simplicity is what makes it such an earworm.
“Moonraker” Is Okay
Every James Bond Theme Song Ranked
I must have taken Shirley Bassey for granted while making this Bond theme ranking. I ranked “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds Are Forever” highly, as they should be, and as a result I must’ve docked “Moonraker” for its similar, almost contrived vibe.
But c’mon. Shirley Bassey is always a win. And the slower, glossier tone fits the space theme to a tee. It’s at least Good – if not Great.
“No Way Home” Is The Best Spider-Man Film Ever
Every Spider-Man Film Ranked (Including “No Way Home”)
I let the hype get to me for this one.
“No Way Home” was one of those great crowd-pleasing movies with cool action set-pieces and mind-blowing cameos. But is it better than Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2”, or even the more recent “Spiderverse” films? Absolutely not. This is what happens when you make a franchise ranking less than a week after watching the new entry.
Also, watching “No Way Home” in cinemas is what made me catch COVID for the first time and have my worst Christmas ever. So screw that film.
2022
“Too Long” Is Meh
“Discovery” – Songs Ranked
One of the great pleasures in life is going back to one of your favourite albums and realising the “worst” song is miles better than you first thought.
I always thought “Too Long” was – you guessed it – too long. After actually forcing myself to sit and listen to it in full a few times, I realised that its length works in its favour. It’s a groovy, catchy song which closes “Discovery” in style.
Seven Of The Songs Are At Least “Good”
“Will Of The People” – Songs Ranked
I had a good laugh re-reading the “Will Of The People” song ranking. I knew I used to be a hardcore Muse fan, but my god … I was way too lenient on this abysmal album.
The only two decent songs are “We Are Fucking Fucked” and “Kill Or Be Killed”. The rest are Okay at best … and a lot teeter on Meh or even Bad.
“The Doctor’s Wife” Is Overrated
Top 10 Underrated (& Overrated) Doctor Who Episodes
It’s a little inappropriate nowadays to defend a Neil Gaiman story of all things, but I think I was always too harsh on “The Doctor’s Wife”.
The story is heartfelt and written with an author’s wit, and it was great to see the TARDIS personified. Heck … Looking back, it might even be the best Season 6 episode.
“Urdak” Is The Best Level
DOOM Eternal – Every Level Ranked
I can understand why 2022 Matt put “Urdak” as the best “DOOM Eternal” level. It’s visually stunning, the enemy gauntlets are tough, and the boss fight at the end is pretty badass.
That being said, the main bulk of the level involves zipping around platforms using awkward parkour. Levels like “Doom Hunter Base” and “Super Gore Nest” are way better representations of what the DOOM franchise is all about.
2023
“Dio” Is The Best Character In The Series
ZeroEscape – Every Character Ranked
In my past self’s defence, The ZeroEscape franchise isn’t exactly filled to the brim with great characters. A lot of them are annoying and serve merely as vessels for the insane plots.
But even so, the despicable Dio can’t be the best character. Surely not. I love a moustache-twirling villain as much as the next guy, but calling him the “best” is a step too far. Other main characters like Carlos, Junpei, Sigma and Phi all made more of a long-lasting impression. Even side characters like Seven and Luna seem like better choices in hindsight …
To be honest, I think the fact he was voiced by Critical Role’s Liam O’Brien skewed my opinion.
I Don’t Like “Prey”
20 Games I Wish I Loved
Back in 2023 I made a list of twenty games that I probably should have liked but for one reason or another dropped. I stand by most of those picks … except for one.
I even said in the original list that I should give “Prey” another go, and I finally did a couple of months ago. Yeah. It’s as awesome as everyone says it is. I’ll probably do some sort of “Every Game I Played In 2026 Ranked” list come December, so I’ll be sure to give it my full plaudits then.
“Superstition” Is Better Than “Close To The Edge”
1972: The Year In Music
It’s not controversial to say “Superstition” is a fantastic song … although it’s a little overplayed, I feel.
When I was reviewing 1972’s music, I listened to “Close To The Edge” and was impressed but left it at that. I’ve listened to it many times since 2023 and now consider it an all-out masterpiece. Sorry Stevie Wonder, but Yes’s 18-minute epic is ten times more magnificent.
“Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” Is Better Than “Starless”, “The Carpet Crawlers” And “Fallen Angel”
1974: The Year In Music
I must’ve been dead against Prog Rock back in 2023, because this opinion hurt my soul to re-read.
King Crimson blew everyone’s minds with “Starless” and “Fallen Angel”. Genesis released one of the most beautiful songs ever with “The Carpet Crawlers” … And so what did I go and do? I gave 1974’s “Best Song” award to a fun yet ultimately inconsequential Steely Dan song.
If I could go back and redo 1974’s retrospective, “Starless” would win by a landslide.
2024
“Empire Of Death” Is Great
Doctor Who “Season 1” – Episodes Ranked
Like how I was a die-hard Muse fan who let sub-par entertainment slide, I think I was far too lenient on the newer Doctor Who seasons (more on that later …).
The “Season 1” finale “Empire Of Death” isn’t the worst Ncuti Gatwa season finale, but I must have been tripping if I thought it was Great. It’s CGI-heavy, underwhelming, and it throws Ruby’s heritage under a bus.
“Motorbike” Is Okay
The New Sound (Geordie Greep) – Every Song Ranked
There actually weren’t many of my opinions from 2024 which were outright mind-boggling, but I did recently listen to “The New Sound” again in full and disagreed with my previous track ranking.
I used to dislike “Motorbike” for the different lead vocalist, but in fairness the track and its vocals fit the tone of the album perfectly. Some of the slower moments are among the most gorgeous of the whole album. Basically, it’s at least Good, maybe even Great if I’m being generous.
2025
“The Reality War” Is Meh
Doctor Who – Every Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) Episode Ranked
No, this isn’t me saying that “The Reality War” deserved better than a Meh rating. It deserves far worse.
It’s one of the worst Doctor Who episodes ever – let alone finales. It’s a shoddy mish-mash of ideas which leads to nothing, and it culminates in both the worst villain defeat ever and the worst regeneration ever. “Bad” or “Terrible” would be better adjectives, basically.
I know Ncuti’s last-minute decision to leave the show led to some re-writes, but this simply isn’t good enough. I’m not looking forward to the rest of RTD’s second era.
“Daily Routine” Is The Worst Song
Merriweather Post Pavilion (Animal Collective) – Every Song Ranked
I discovered “Merriweather Post Pavilion” during my 2009 Music Retrospective, and I immediately fell in love with Animal Collective’s liberating style. I ranked the tracks from the album pretty much straight away.
In hindsight, I probably should have waited a week or two, listened to the album a couple more times, that sort of thing. I used to think “Daily Routine” was the worst on the album (mostly because its second half is admittedly slow and drawn-out), but what universe is it merely an “Okay” song? It slaps!
My new “least favourite” from the album would probably be “Guys Eyes”. I doubt I’ll suddenly fall in love with that song … but stranger things have happened.
“Step” Is Better Than “I Appear Missing”
2013: The Year In Music
Like with “Superstition” in 1972, saying “Step” was the best song of 2013 isn’t the craziest opinion in the world. It’s a nostalgic favourite from my childhood, and Vampire Weekend’s kooky style and unique production are very endearing.
But the more I listen to “I Appear Missing” by Queens of the Stone Age, the more I realise it’s one of the best Rock songs of all time. It’s heavy, kinda psychedelic, and the lyrics and general songwriting are perfect.
2026
Even though it was only a few weeks ago at the time of writing, there was one opinion in 2026 which seems baffling in hindsight …
“Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up” Is Great
“Stranger Things” Season 5 – Every Episode Ranked
I let emotions cloud my judgement for this one.
The “Stranger Things” finale had a few scenes near the end which made me shed a tear, and I let that dictate my overall opinion. I named it the second-best episode of the season, and I called it “Great” and overhated.
But yeah. I see where the hate is coming from. It’s a sloppy, CGI-heavy mess of an ending which doesn’t really provide any satisfying conclusions to the characters. It’s amazing how quickly an opinion can go from A to B once you stop to think about it …
